On Page Optimization

I'm sure you're aware of onpage seo techniques like; meta tags, title tags, keyword repition, alt tags, etc.

About 3 years ago the SE's started switching their algorythms to put a heavy emphasis on IBL's, so the more links you have pointing to your site, the higher you rank. When you have people link to your site obviously the higher the PR, the better the link it is. and make sure you have the anchor text match your main keywords

so if you have a site about widgets, but the domain is abc.com you would want the anchor tag to be widgets, not the domain name. Correct
<a href="abc.com">Widgets</a>

not good
<a href="abc.com">abc.com</a>, <a href="abc.com">click here</a> or any variation that is not your main keyword.

The most popular example of this is Miserable failure, the number 1 listing in google goes to George W. Bush's page on whitehouse.gov. Not because of the page, but because everyone linked to his page with miserable failure as the anchor tag

Also when you optimize pages be as precise as possible and place your main keywords first

example in the title tag

DO not do
Welcome to abc.com, our site about widgets

Correct
Widgets by abc.com

try to optimize only 1 phrase per page, multiple keywords per page usually ends up lowering your ranking.

You can check your back links to your site by going to google, msn and yahoo and typing in link:http://www.yoursite.com

although msn and yahoo will show more results then google, google only shows a partial listing and usually the sites with the higher pr will be listed first. If you don't have the google toolbar installed, get it http://toolbar.google.com/

The most important to get listed in is dmoz.org. Currently I have every site I control submitted there. Many directories including google get there results from dmoz.

and I almost forgot http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/suggestion/ this site will give you list of phrases that people search for related to your main phrase, kind of tells you what you need to optimize your site for.
